TENNANT AND DISTRICT TIMES FRIDAY 29 AUGUST 2014 7
AUGUST Parliamentary Sittings com-
menced with the Northern Territory
Government delivering their ‘report
card’ on two years of CLP rule.
While Chief Minister Adam Giles dodged
questions on facilitating a nuclear waste dump
in Central Australia, appointment of a Territory
Magistrate, allocation of water licenses and
conducting an inquiry into political donations
his CLP colleagues drifted off and away from
their parliamentary responsibilities.
Independent Member Gerry Wood MLA used
the 3.5 hours allocated to Opposition and In-
dependent general business calling for a wide
ranging inquiry into two decades of political
donations premised on Labor’s demand for
an inquiry into CLP aligned Foundation 51
With only three CLP members in Parliament
and none speaking up on a call for voices after
being prompted by the Speaker twice the motion
passed with the support of Labor and Palmer
United Party members.
Attorney General John Elferink grimed faced
and clearly displeased rushed into the House
desperate to kill the motion by gagging Opposi-
tion debate with Government numbers however
the subsequent division failed and the motion for
inquiry on behalf of the people passed!
Clearly dysfunctional in Parliament Chief
Minister Giles and CLP $33 million spin ma-
chine then went into melt down defending the
Treasurer’s homophobic remarks to a Public
Servant eventually accepting his resignation.
In response to the CLP report card Shadow
Minister for Government Accountability Ken
Vowles branded the CLP Government the
most dysfunctional administration anywhere
Clearly the CLP have broken election com-
mitments, overseen rising cost of living, rising
unemployment, frontline public service jobs
slashed, 340 businesses closing, split of Pow-
erWater and now further increases to electricity
Before resigning CLP Treasurer directed the
PowerWater Corporation to increase network
charges by 7.7 per cent in 2014-15 and a further
8.0 per cent in 2015-16 in addition to another 5.0
per cent electricity increase in January topping
the $2000 average annual Territory family bill!
Since the General Election in 2012 the Terri-
tory has seen, two Chief Ministers, four Deputy
Chiefs (now vacant), four Treasurers, four Edu-
cation Ministers, three Business Ministers, three
Employment Ministers, three Local Government
two Health Ministers!
Incredibly the next CLP Cabinet represents the
seventh reshuffle in two years and Territorians
are justified to ask, when will this Government
get its act together?
If you can’t run your own party, you can’t run
the Territory evidenced by CLP seats in Parlia-
ment crashing from 16 to 13 because of broken
promises to the bush and recurring internal
The Giles CLP Government has a majority of
one and writes its own report cards however in
the essence of true democracy, the people will

PACE officers hosted an information stall at
the Harmony Day Markets at Battery Hill last
Thursday to educate community members
about the impact of kids missing school.
The education sessions were designed to
highlight key issues which effect students in
Tennant Creek, Epenarra and Ali Curung com-
munities. These issues include missing school
on Mondays and Fridays, parents dropping kids
off late to school and the impact this has on a
child’s future life choices. In September, PACE
will be hosting community education sessions in
Peko Park every Tuesday between 10am - 2pm.
Parents, carers and interested community
members are welcome to attend.

EXACTLY 50 years ago in the
musically rigorous city of Vien-
na, a 14-year-old boy called Re-
inhard Flatischler who had al-
ready been performing publicly
on the piano for seven years
suffered a nervous breakdown.
Suffering with acute asthma and
anxiety, the boy was in a coma for
When he awakened, he had a deep
insight into the nature of rhythm.
Back on his feet, Reinhard headed
overland to India where he studied
drumming with a master and, later,
other masters in Bali, Brazil, Cuba,
Japan, Ghana and Korea.
Always, he asked himself the ques-
tion ‘what is it that makes music uni-
versally healing’, and in the process
he evolved Taketina.
Visiting troubadour John Anderson
(pictured) has been learning to lead
for the past four years under Reinhard
and he’s willing to share his rhythm
Next Tuesday, he’s offering a free
taster to anyone with legs to step,
hands to clap and a speaking/singing
He says it will be fun and seriously
Join John at the CWA at 5:30pm next
Tuesday, 2 September, for a Taketina
And afterwards at 7pm, stay for a
performance by John and his TC Elas-
tic Band for their last performance of
The Present. There’s no charge, so be
sure to get with the beat.
