Former Sports ‘n’ Rec employee
stars in New York marathon
Management and staff at Anyinginyi Health would like to send a big congratulations
to former Sport and Rec employee, Adrian Dodson-Shaw for starring in the New York
Marathon as one the five male participants from the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP).
The Project was established by World Champion marathon runner, Robert de Castella.
Adrian completed the course in 3 hours 36 minutes despite rolling his ankle after 25km.
To be selected as a runner to participate in the IMP is a great achievement and a won-
derful event to be a part of, all IMP team members are required to complete a Certificate
IV in Leisure and Health, in addition to intensive training to prepare for the New York
Adrian worked at Anyinginyi Health and was a valued member of our Sport and Rec-
reation team, Adrian now lives and works in Broome, WA. We wish Adrian all the best
with his future endeavours.
Delighted mum Barbara Shaw explained that... “Naturally as a mother I am very proud.
I continue to pinch myself to see if this is real. Adrian was always a runner from primary
school days where he was always in the top three to finish, I still have his ribbons. He
loved basketball and played for a number of seasons with the Redbacks in Perth; during
this time he attended a clinic with Ricky Grace his national hero equivalent to Michael
Jordan. Adrian trained with Coburg with a dream to enter AFL. Adrian’s outlook on life
has changed remarkably. To be selected by the Indigenous Marathon Project to run the
New York marathon is a personal achievement and to be given the opportunity to per-
form at the international level is just incredible. I am so proud of my son”.
If anyone is interested in following this great example to become part of the Indigenous
Marathon Project, contact Marcus Maher- Sport and Recreation manager.
