nant Creek is buzzing with excite-
ment as locals gear up for the
Australia Day celebrations on
On 26 January the nation celebrates
what’s great about being Australian with
official and formal functions as well as
fun activities with family and friends.
Here in Tennant Creek, residents and
visitors celebrate all day starting early
with the Triathlon out at Lake Mary
Ann and then the official flag raising,
Citizenship Ceremony and Australia Day
Awards at Battery Hill.
Participants can also dine on a generous
outback ‘Aussie breakfast’, provided by
Karen’s Kitchen, with a complimentary
glass of champagne.
Refuelled and ready for some fun,
locals and visitors then head out to
nearby Lake Mary Ann (Tingkkarli) to
compete in a range of novelty Australian
activities, including egg throwing, cold
pie eating contest, thong throwing, leaky
bucket race and raft race.
Word on the street is that locals have
already put together teams for the
Triathlon and raft race and are adding
finishing touches to their vessels and

Barb Shaw said the day is going to be
great fun and everyone in the community
is urged to participate or join in. “Thanks
to recent rain the dam is overflowing and
everything is looking fresh and green so
the scene is set for a perfect day,” said
President Shaw. “Remember to bring a
hat, sunscreen and possibly an umbrella.”

6.15am-7.15am - Lake Mary Ann
Start the day with a great early morning workout with the Triathlon. Bring
a team of three or go solo for a 100m swim, 2km bike ride and 2km run.
All registered participants are required to arrive at Lake Mary Ann car park
between 5.45-6am, so the start gun can go off at 6.15am sharp. Registrations
will be taken until 4pm today. No late registrations will be taken.
OFFICIAL CEREMONY &
8am-11am – Battery Hill
Head on up to Battery Hill for the official proceedings with Flag Raising,
Citizenship Ceremony, Australia Day Awards and a hearty outback breakfast
with a complimentary glass of champagne. Tickets are $10.
12 noon-7pm – Lake Mary Ann
Come out to Lake Mary Ann for a fun afternoon jam packed with novelty
games including Thong Throwing, Egg Throwing, Cold Pie Eating Contest,
Leaky Bucket Race, Tug of War and Raft Race. You can register on the
day for games. There’s great prizes to be won, including Best Dressed, plus
a Free BBQ, Free Bottled Water, Slip ‘n’ Slide, and Triple J’s Hottest 100
countdown. Remember to bring a hat, sunscreen and possibly an umbrella!
FREE BUS TRANSFERS from Paterson Street to Lake Mary Ann from
12noon-2pm, picking up at BP Ser vice Station, Peko Park, Mobil and
Eldorado Motor Inn. Flag the bus down. Then from 4pm-6pm, picking up
from Lake Mary Ann and setting down on Paterson Street.
