things,’ is the mantra of the Northern Ter-
ritory Emergency Service (NTES) for safer
Tennant Creek Volunteer Unit represents frontline
NT Emergency Service in the Barkly supporting and
protecting our community like Australia Day at Lake
Karl Herzog joined NTES in Tennant Creek 1996
seeing the skill set and knowledge gained after thirty
five years in the Australian Scouting movement easily
transferable to a volunteer unit keeping the com-
Karl became NTES permanent staff in 1999 as Edu-
cation Development Officer, Alice Springs however
returning to Tennant Creek in 2004 as a volunteer
before promotion to Area Manager Barkly in 2011-14.
Testament to Karl’s community spirit after retire-
ment in December he re-joined the Tennant Creek
Volunteer Unit offering vast experience in Land
Search and Rescue, Air Search Observing and sup-
porting Police forensic operations.
Visiting the Tennant Creek Volunteer Unit’s weekly
meeting I had the privilege of witnessing unit plan-
ning for the 2015 operational calendar.
Australia Day celebrations featured foremost how-
ever supporting the Territory’s ANZAC Centenary
Borella Ride, Easter water sports at Elliott’s Long-
reach Waterhole and Tennant Creek RSL Sub-Branch
ANZAC Day commemorations also documented.
I was amazed by the technology the Unit administers
including off-road vehicles, communications and
navigation equipment, rescue trailer, power genera-
tion, lighting and flood boat.
Locals and regional residents interested in learning
skills in GPS navigation, map reading, radio com-
munications, four wheel driving, operating small
machines, boat handling and land and air rescue

While touring the Unit I was introduced to many
facets of land and air search rescue and community
support acting as ‘dummy’ while Volunteers were
instructed in preparation and fitting of a cool vest
managing heat stress.
Australia Day at the dam showcased Tennant Creek
Volunteer Unit’s forward command post, small craft
rescue operations and community engagement by
dedicated trained officers.
The Tennant Creek Volunteer Association won a
2014 Northern Territory Resilient Australia Award for
their mobile multi-agency portable radio communica-
tions platform deployed throughout the Barkly during
Tennant Creek Volunteer Unit, under the control of
the Northern Territory Emergency Services (NTES)
Southern Region claims members receiving national
medals for outstanding commitment.
Tennant Creek Volunteer Unit is looking for new
members offering training and skill development of
important orienteering skills in challenging environ-
ments translating to personal survival skills while
serving and protecting the community.
