SAFETY House is administered by the
Northern Territory Police in the interests of
A Northern Territory Police Co-ordinator maintains
the program including education and awareness at
schools and community events.
Safety House originated in Victoria following con-
cerned parents of children being approached after
school representing a community volunteer initiative
for keeping children safe when out-of-home.
The Safety House Program provides a network of
easily identifiable houses and businesses for children
to shelter should they encounter difficulties travel-
ling to and from school with houses and businesses
selected on the basis a responsible adult is present
and willing to help.
Safety Houses are identified by a triangular logo, a
smiling house on a yellow triangle background sup-
ported by street sign directions in urban areas where
all occupants aged 16 years and over have suitability
checks completed by Police.
Safety House is supported by Neighbourhood Watch
NT citing the motto, “Feeling unsure, knock on a
Safety House door” for children lost, scared, hurt,
ill, frightened by animals or bullied.
When informed of the program by the NT Police
Co-ordinator I registered the Barkly Electorate Office
on Paterson Street Tennant Creek as a Safety House
offering security for children and teenagers under
As a Northern Territory Electorate Office we offer
support for all constituents across a diverse range
of issues however registration as a Safety House
signals a clear and defined safe place for children
As a teacher of 30 years with current registration
for working with children supported by an Elector-
ate Officer, we offer Safety House support during
office hours 9.00am – 5.00pm therefore requiring
households and businesses for alternative times and
An important part of the registration process is edu-
cation and awareness of the Safety House Program
highlighting an opportunity to join a community
child safety initiative and I encourage constituents
to consider registering.
The NT Police Co-ordinator facilitates Safety
House awareness at schools and in the community
however parents, guardians and significant family
adults should initiate discussions with children about
‘stranger danger’ and child protective behaviours.
Interested persons should contact Northern Territory
Police, Safety House Unit PO Box 41500 Casuarina
NT 0811, email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone
(08) 89 990 843.
Safety House Northern Territory provides infor-
mation for householders and businesses supporting
registration and providing six month up-dates.
Community action like Safety House not only keeps
children in need safe it also provides a clear deterrent
to those who may harm children in our community
