A MOTION of no confidence is the most seri-
ous and significant motion introduced and
debated in Parliament.
Under normal circumstances the Territory communi-
ty would have the reasonable expectation Parliament
run its full fixed four year term until the next election.
However the circumstances confronting the North-
ern Territory community and Parliament are not
normal and demanded action.
Territorians betrayed by the Giles CLP Government
view a fundament breach of trust by a dysfunctional
political administration not listening to the people.
Add an arrogant Chief Minister and ‘speed dating’
Cabinet 14 then cohesion and competence essential
to effective government is gone!
It’s not just the Labor Opposition and Independents
articulating the serious deficiencies in government
and the mess created by Chief Minister Giles.
Families, business, community groups, the media,
parliamentary members and even the Chief Minister
in the infamous leaked Alice Springs recording have
expressed their concerns about the ineptitude and
arrogance of the CLP Government.
Indigenous communities, teachers, nurses, police,
firefighters, paramedics, public servants, businesses
and non-government organisations have had enough
of the CLP governing for itself not for Territorians.
Labor’s motion of no confidence was not about the
Opposition and Independents it was about reason-
able expectations of Territorians about priorities,
competence and behaviour of the government elected
to serve them.
Serving the community is the fundamental role of
good government not a self-serving political circus
characterised by hostility and botched leadership chal-
lenges trashing our reputation making us the laughing
stock of the nation.
Territorians want a government that values and in-
vests in education, builds a viable health service and
protects our most vulnerable children.
Territorians want a government that puts downward
pressure on the cost of living not one that burdens
families and businesses with savage tariff increases
for electricity, water and sewerage and other govern-
Territorians want a government that maintains and
operates public assets such as TIO in the community
interest not privatisation zealots flogging taxpayer as-
sets desperate to fund extravagant election promises.
Territorians want a government that supports busi-
ness not one that damages the investment environ-
ment, burdens business with costs and operates on a
“cash for access” basis.
Territorians want a government that strikes the right
balance between development and the environment
not one that over-rides good science and environmen-
tal values to fast track inappropriate projects.
Unbelievably only one CLP Member spoke in sup-
port of Chief Minister Giles however CLP Member
for Araluen spoke the absolute damming truth against
him! (Read the transcripts on NT Hansard)
