THIS year, playgroups around Australia are celebrating 40
years of the concept of providing care and socialisation
for children under five.
Less formal than pre-school education, playgroups provide parents
with a resource to entertain and stimulate toddlers and babies in a
safe and structured environment and provide some relief from the
isolation that stay at home parents often experience.
A dedicated group of parents and carers has afforded the Tennant
Creek Community with not one, but two thriving playgroup forums.
The two groups joined forces on Monday at the Gough Centre to
launch a week of activities in celebration of National Playgroup
Morning tea was provided by Top of Town Café and there was a
good turnout of parents and little ones alike.
“At this stage we can only afford to sustain one day a week at the
Gough Centre,” Playgroup Coordinator Rebecca Way said.
“But thanks to in-kind support from Rebecca Healy and Jason New-
man at the Eldorado Motor Inn, we are able to hold extra sessions, and
Bonny Baby Clothes proprietors Kellie Hughes and Matt McKinlay
also host group activities at their main street store.”
All the playgroup kids were treated to spectacular display of ma-
chinery, lights and sound last Thursday when the fire engine turned
up at Tex’s Schnitzel House.
A craft morning is planned for next Monday at the Gough Centre
and on Thursday at Tex’s, there is an Easter Egg hunt to round off a
very successful National Playgroup Week in Tennant Creek.
