JUST days after Mick Thompson
turned 22, he was tragically and
fatally struck by a vehicle as he
attempted to cross the Barkly
Highway last Friday night.
The accident has left the head stock-
man’s small community at Mittiebah
Station, north-east of Tennant Creek,
Mick was with friends who were
camped at Soudan Station on their way
to the Camooweal Pub’s annual Meet
and Greet held last weekend - which he
had attended for the previous four years.
“Mick and three of his mates from Mit-
tiebah met up with some blokes from
Soudan for a few drinks,” his brother
“He walked off to get some fresh air
and while he was crossing the road, he
“It was just very bad luck.”
Nev, the mechanic at Mittiebah, said his
younger brother was a genuinely good
bloke who got on with everyone.
“He was pretty popular,” he said.
“Everyone who knew him, loved him.
“He was very good natured and if any-
one was willing to learn, he was more
than willing to help them.”
The Thompson brothers hail from a
sheep farming family in Cunnamulla in
Queensland and were sent to boarding
school at Toowoomba Grammar.
As soon as he left school, Mick headed
to Mittiebah Station where he worked for
the past five years.
He was followed by Nev a couple of
years later and the two both loved life
on the Barkly cattle station.
“Mittiebah was where Mick called
home,” Nev said.
“The mob here was like family to him.
“[Managers] Marty and Danielle
[Doyle] don’t just employ people, they
adopt them so it’s a pretty tight-knit
group out here.”
Nev said people from Mittiebah and
neighbouring stations had taken the news
“After I finished dealing with Avon
Downs Police on Saturday morning, I
caught up with the fellas who were still
at Soudan,” he said.
“I told them Mick would have wanted
them to soldier on and he definitely
wouldn’t have wanted them to waste
precious working time moping about
“That’s what he was like, there was no
nonsense about him.
“But he’ll be missed out here, there’s
no doubt about that.”
Mick and Nev’s parents and sister
travelled to Mittiebah from their current
home at Clifton in Queensland.
Memorial services will be held at the
station next Friday and later at Clifton.
Remote Sergeant Colin Ragg from
Avon Downs Police Station said no
charges would be laid over the incident
that occurred at about 10:30pm.
“It was simply a terrible accident,”
“The driver of the vehicle stopped and
immediately attempted to provide first
aid, but tragically he passed away at the
INCREASING the child abuse task force and tougher trespass laws
for unwanted visitors were some of the ideas floated at a meeting
between Chief Minister Adam Giles and high ranking public servants
in Alice Springs last Friday.
The meeting was called by the Chief Minister to discuss services and safety in
Tennant Creek and Alice Springs town camps following the rape of a six-year-old
girl at Alice’s Hidden Valley town camp.
Improved transport services to transport children to school, expanding the use
of public housing safety officers in town camps and an outreach service for town
camp families to help them get children ready for school were other ideas discussed.
Mr Giles said the meeting was an opportunity to run through the facts and statistics
about the camps and get a handle on the main problems facing residents and agencies.
“I am committed to working with agencies, service providers and the residents
themselves on improving the safety and living conditions experienced in town camps
over the months ahead,” he said.
