FROM the first bounce (pictured left) footy
took a turn for the serious at Purkiss Reserve
The oval looked great with its shiny new change rooms
looming in the background and fans got behind their
teams of choice with plenty of boundary advice and
Elliott Hawks had the unenviable task of staring down
the mighty Spitfires and until the half time siren, they
were still in the race due to some inaccurate kicking
from the Spitfires forwards.
The reigning premiers had a 5-10-(40) advantage over
the Hawks 1-2-(8) after the second term but when they
returned to centre field they made it known they were
taking no prisoners.
Final scores for the first elimination clash went all
the Sporties way with a resounding 13-13-(91) to the
Baker kicked four majors with three to Nichols, two
from Riley and one each to Bracken, James, Lowe and
Barton kicked two majors for the Hawks with one each
coming from Jackson and Thompson.
Game 2 was a match up between the Janapurlalki
Eagles and the Barkly Work Camp team.
A slow start by the Eagles had them dragging the
chain at the end of the first term but by half time they
had regained their composure and control of the ball.
They kept the Work Campers under the hammer allow-
ing only 1 point to them for the whole third quarter and
finished the first round of the finals with a 17-12-(114)
to 8-5-(53), pushing BWC out of the comp.
Goal scorers for the Eagles were Farrell-Nelson and
Driver with five, Grant three, Dawson two and one each
to Bloomfield and Jones.
Watson and Anderson kicked two for the BWC team
and single majors each to Shannon and Grant.
There are bound to be feathers all over the ground this
Saturday when the birds of prey, Elliott Hawks get a
second crack at the Grand Final, fronting up against the
As a bonus, footy fans will get to see a curtain raiser
match between the girls from Elliott taking on the
Stronger Sisters team which should be a fantastic war
up to the preliminary at 2pm.
