ARTIST IN PROFILE
The Visual Arts team have also
had an extremely busy time after
the Festival, first hosting a Barkly
Artist Camp & Korean Nomadic
Residency for a week in the BRA
studio before heading off to
Desert Mob in Alice Springs.
Also in the convoy was a bus of Traditional women dancers who were invited to perform at the
opening. For the first time BRA was invited to submit works into the prestigious Desert Mob
Exhibition that runs alongside the marketplace and symposium. If you are in Alice Springs you
can drop into Araluen art centre to see a number of our ‘Artists of the Barkly’ works exhibited.
Visual Arts Co-Ordinator, Rhonda Plummer has just returned from a week in Adelaide with
Desart. Rhonda is one of only a handful of Arts Workers whom were invited to undertake
extensive arts training with Desart. This week in Adelaide they curated the photographic
exhibtion as part of the Tarnanthi Art Festival, which included photos from Owartilla Arts
Manager, Estelle Mick. Whilst there, Rhonda was interviewd by National Georgraphic and says
“They were teaching me how to pose in the photo’s like a model!
Susannah Nakkamarra Nelson was once again selected to have her works exhibited in the Sheffer
Gallery in Sydney. Gallery owner, Peter Fay only selects up to 10 artists across Australia each year.
‘Conversation Plates’, the joint project between BRA and the NDIS has left the Barkly and spent
some time exhibited on the walls in the NDIA office in Geelong. It then continued on and is
currently being exhibited in the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre for the New World
NDIA Conference. In November it will also be displayed at the Brisbane State Library for the
‘International Day of Disability’ exhibition.
Between two spaces: The traditional and modern stories of the Barkly
The works in this new exhibition represent the artists day-to-day realities – cattle, church, Toyotas
– hung alongside artworks imbued with cultural stories such as bush medicine. The works in the
exhibition showcase a diverse range of styles and mediums shaped by the distinct regions in which
the artists live. Barkly Regional Arts gallery will be exhibiting paintings, hand-printed linocut
fabrics of Kulumindini Arts (Elliott) alongside weavings of Canteen Creek and Epenarra, and
ceramics of Tartakula Arts of Tennant Creek. Gallery Hours are Monday-Friday 10am-4pm.
