The Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation (“Corporation”) wishes to address
reports about the presence of asbestos in the demountable building products
that were imported into Australia in 2006.
At the time that the products were imported into the country, the product importing
agency advised the Corporation that there were no Asbestos Containing
Materials (“ACM”) in those products.
The Corporation relied upon that representation in purchasing the products.
As a result of the recent reports, the Corporation commissioned laboratory
chemical analysis which has now confirmed that those products contain ACM.
Asbestos can cause serious and potentially fatal health problems, including
respiratory disease, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
In order to contain the asbestos within the products and to minimise any potential
harm, the Corporation advises that the products should not be disturbed, broken
apart or demolished without observing appropriate safety regulations.
The Corporation is working closely with NT WorkSafe and other relevant
government authorities to establish appropriate risk control measures pertaining
to these products to protect the safety of workers and members of the public.
This has included:
l Installing fencing around all areas to ensure they are secure;
l Placing ‘no unauthorised entry’ signs on each fence;
l Engaging Tennant Creek Security to conduct patrols of each site
throughout the day and night;
l Contacting the Police and advising them to notify the Corporation if
trespassers are found on any of these sites so that we can have them
l Placing signage on each fence advising parents that it is not safe for
children to play in these areas;
l Engaging an interpreter fluent in a number of local languages to visit
families living in surrounding areas and explain to them the hazards of
l Placing educational illustration signs provided by Work Safe on each
fence which highlight the dangers of asbestos.
The Corporation has engaged a professional asbestos removal organisation
and will keep the community updated on its progress.
