30,000 sawdust bags delivered in social employment success
Jemena’s Tennant Creek Social Employment Project has
successfully ended with the manufacture of 30,000 sawdust bags.
A team of nine local people and one supervisor delivered the
goods over a 12 week period.
Mountains of sawdust were delivered to Tennant Creek where
the hard working team filled, weighed, tied and stacked the bags
for storage ahead of construction.
Jemena’s social employment program included picking up and
dropping off the team, supplying breakfast and lunch and
undertaking laundry. Cultural and financial training was also
included in the program.
The sawdust bags are a critical part of the delivery of the NGP
and this team’s efforts was invaluable. Around 50,000 pipe skids
were also delivered as part of the program and both products are
stacked to provide a soft ‘cradle’ for the pipe to lay in, preventing
damage to the pipe’s protective coating.
Jemena would like to thank Tennant Creek business Remote
Concrete NT, which was engaged to deliver the project. Due to
Jemena having to re-sequence the NGP Project, the social
employment program was smaller than we originally planned
however we are looking at other initiatives that may allow the
social enterprise to continue.
Jemena would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work
in the delivery and support of this program.
Jemena has received consent
to construct its Northern Gas
Pipeline (NGP) paving the way
for McConnell Dowell to begin
building from near Tennant
Creek. The Northern Territory
construction of 344 kilometres
of the pipeline route.
McConnell Dowell, which was
reappointed by Jemena to
build a large proportion of the
pipeline, will get underway
soon. McConnell Dowell, has
been a key partner with
Jemena since 2015. Jemena’s
Managing Director Paul Adams
welcomed the construction
contractor back to the Project.
Consent to construct granted, pipeline
works to begin in the Territory
“With land access now agreed
across much of the Territory, we
now have the certainty we need to
appoint McConnell Dowell to
construct this section of the NGP,”
Mr Adams said.
The first works will include the
upgrade and establishment of
existing and new access tracks
and the preparation of areas for
temporary construction camps.
