BARKLY Regional Council Mayor
wrote to the Chief Minister posing
copious political questions about
NT Government jobs in Tennant
Creek and Barkly.
The importance of such information
must be shared with constituents so the
following provides a further summary of
the Labor Government’s commitments.
Interesting to note, Mayor Edgington
was the most senior Public Servant in
Tennant Creek under the Giles CLP
Government and Regional Executive Di-
rector for Housing from 2011 responsible
for public housing.
I fully understand the Mayor question-
ing Public Service numbers in Tennant
Creek and the Barkly as under the Giles
CLP Government Mr Edgington as his
senior public official witnessed signifi-
cant job cuts!
By 2014 the Giles led CLP Govern-
ment had slashed net capital spending by
$822.4 million that included $12 million
cut from Police and $98 million cut from
the infrastructure program and you don’t
recover from that quickly.
By 2016 the Giles led CLP Government
had slashed $6.0 million from pre-school
education and $13 million cut from pri-
mary school education budgets resulting
in 182 school based staff gone from NT
As Mayor Edgington would well
remember as the most Senior Public
official alongside Giles, Tennant Creek
and Barkly schools suffered with exten-
sive teacher and support staff job cuts
particularly in Tennant Creek.
The CLP ‘slash and burn’ approach to
the Territory economy saw $13 million
cut from Local Government and $1
million directly cut from Housing two
Departments Mr Edgington presided
over under the CLP!
Since September 2016 the Territory
Labor Government has embarked on
targeted investment to restore the sig-
nificant gaps in public sector service
delivery focussing on practical genera-
tional change policy as clearly there are
no quick fixes.
The Labor Government immediately
invested an extra $20 million into Global
School Budgets supporting schools em-
ploying more teachers and support staff
including Tennant Creek in addition to
the new Families as First Teachers pro-
gram, Juno off-campus Education Centre
and $6.5 million for the Early Childhood
Integrated Learning Centre.
Police numbers have been bolstered
under a Territory Labor Government
with Tennant Creek seeing an increase
in officers and our significant share in an
additional 75 Police Auxiliaries across
Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Kath-
erine implementing a comprehensive
plan targeting alcohol-fuelled violence.
The Territory Labor Government is
investing a record $1.1 billion into re-
mote Indigenous housing from 1st July
2017 and already in partnership with the
Commonwealth realising 43 new remote
houses and 120 full up-grades in Ali Cu-
rung, Alpurrurulam, Minyerri, Robinson
River and Epenarra, completed or under
Last week I announced a $69 million
public housing repairs and maintenance
program across the NT realising a $1.5
million upgrade of Tennant Creek public
housing complexes and a share in Central
Australia’s $15 million to repair vacant
Territory Housing stock, targeting 12
houses for Tennant Creek.
In addition the Labor Government has
programmed 16 new or replacement
Public Housing dwellings for Tennant
Creek over the next two years.
