LAST Sunday a group of
friends gathered at the Memo
to say farewell and good luck
to John Stocks.
Stocksy (pictured) is moving to
Tasmania this week for predomi-
nately health related reasons. He first
moved to Tennant Creek 25 years
ago and became our sign writer,
entertainer and friend.
His musical ability had been recog-
nised many years ago when he won
Australia’s New Faces and was also
voted People’s Choice.
He played for the crowd and as
usual sounded wonderful. Nashy
and Peter teamed up for a few num-
bers in tribute for John and everyone
enjoyed the barbeque.
Hicksy said a few words outlining
John’s dedication to Tennant and its
people as well as his friendship and
a presentation was made.
His artistic abilities were not only
musical as can be seen by his amaz-
ing sign-writing work and iconic
murals which are on display all over
town for example at Battery Hill.
We lost one of his great works
when the Pioneer building burnt
down. John also has been very
community minded and has been in-
strumental in organising fundraising
events for things like the Port Arthur
Massacre where over $4k was raised
and also for the Glen Hewitson fund
(the murdered policeman) where an
amazing $14k was raised, Tennant
displaying its amazing generosity
Another example of his community
involvement was his donning the
Father Christmas suit for many years
for the town Christmas Tree.
Stocky thanked the Memo staff
and committee for putting on the
“It was a really lovely day and I
couldn’t think of a better place to
spend it,” he said.
Stocksy will be missed in Tennant
and he knows he is always welcome
back even just to plug in the guitar
and grace us with his amazing voice.
