THE passage of CLP legislation
through Parliament was a done deal
on the numbers however was the Ter-
ritory done over?
The flawed CLP Alcohol Protection Orders
do nothing to prevent alcohol related crime
rising 43.7 per cent in Tennant Creek in the
past 12 months as they don’t address the point
of sale simply burdening police with crimes
after the grog is sold.
This failing CLP legislation bans drinkers
from purchasing alcohol or visiting licensed
premises however no one knows who is
banned effectively doing nothing to prevent
the purchase of alcohol at the point of sale!
Nhulunbuy’s local ‘Banned Drinkers Reg-
ister’ delivered a 5 percent drop in alcohol
related crime 2012-13 however Tennant en-
dured rising crime rates with alcohol related
assaults up by 43.7%, domestic violence by
42.7% and sexual assaults by 55.6%!
Teachers filled the galleries of Parliament
House protesting CLP drastic cuts to Educa-
tion citing 120 teachers losing their job in
addition to chaos created by the CLP with
200 ‘displaced’ teachers not knowing where
they will teach in 2014.
Federal Labor Opposition held the Liberals
in Canberra to account forcing a Tony Abbot
‘triple back-flip’ on scrapped Gonski Educa-
tion Reforms with funding tied to social and
economic disadvantage imperative for the
Territory’s circumstances addressed.
However with funding ‘back on the table’
the CLP Education Minister announced in-
frastructure spending in the Territory while
sacking teachers and school support staff!
CLP Minister for Local Government ig-
nored democracy and transparency rushing
through laws providing powers to change
Shire boundaries, terminate Mayors and
elected Council Members replacing them
with Ministerial appointments!
Ministerial power to change council bound-
aries and dissolve local councils without
proper consultation with Local Government
authorities and constituents demonstrates
CLP arrogance and indifference desperate to
fulfil election promises in CLP seats at the
expense of other shires.
Alternative policy put to Government mo-
tioned an Independent Boundary Commis-
sion assessing changes in relation to financial
sustainability and operational parameters for
local government areas and elected members
affected by shire boundary changes.
In leaked information Aboriginal CLP
members were shocked to discover their
Government’s planned review of sacred sites
legislation dumping the Aboriginal Areas
Protection Authority Board (AAPA).
The Labor Opposition raised concerns in
Parliament calling for the Terms of Refer-
ence reviewing the AAPAAct to be open and
accountable conducted in the public domain
for the benefit of all Territorians.
The final Parliamentary Sittings for 2013
exposed a government which refuses to
listen, formulates back room policy on the
run and struggling with economic settings
driving up Northern Territory debt.
The CLP seized Government claiming to
cut Territory debt yet 2012-13 accounts por-
tray debt rising by $1 billion under the CLP
economic policy settings.
2012-13 accounts show extra revenue of
$55 million out of the pockets of Territorians
like power and water price hikes in addition
to $67 million from Territory businesses in
additional taxes and charges.
However the CLP Government spent $84
million in the same period 2012-13 therefore
I put the question to Territory families and
businesses, what have we got to show for it?
