THE Member for Barkly is a privi-
leged position and I thank the people
of the electorate for their support and
encouragement in 2013.
There is no doubt being a Local Member in
Government has definite advantages however
political life in Opposition remains a critical
role for democracy holding Government to
Tennant Creek, Gulf Country and Barkly
Tableland represent important regions for the
Northern Territory’s future hosting primary
industries, natural resources including energy
and minerals providing jobs and prosperity.
Education is the key to prosperity and
preparing our young people is crucial to fill
jobs as the alternative sees workers from
Australian states and overseas flying in to
claim the wealth!
As a community we must support our
teachers, school support staff and students
to achieve the best education therefore chal-
lenging Government policy cutting teachers
and education budgets as the stakes are too
high for complacency.
As an educator over 30 years I am alarmed
by Liberal policy with Prime Minister Tony
Abbott and Chief Minister Adam Giles
employing hundreds of Truancy Officers
pushing high support needs students into
schools with no programs targeting behav-
iour management and support while sacking
teachers and support staff!
Challenges in 2014 remain increasing cost
of living for families and business including
the 5 percent Power and Water price hike
on 1st January adding an extra $300 to the
average household power bill.
The Opposition released results of a Power
Price survey with 935 responses showing Ter-
ritory families are buckling under the strain of
2013 price hikes before copping the Country
Liberal Party’s next five per cent increase in
the new year.
The survey shows 82.6 per cent of people
surveyed indicated power, water and sew-
erage prices have already hurt financially
increasing the cost of living risking Territory
families leaving for other states unable to
afford the NT.
Tennant Creek crime rates rose significantly
under the CLP 2012-13 signaling widespread
alcohol abuses and failing Government
alcohol policy addressing problem drinkers
however with $100 million appropriated
constituents demand a dramatic reduction
in anti-social behavior and crime 2014-16.
The CLP promised Tennant Creek increased
alcohol rehabilitation programs in 2014
however with policy neglecting targeting
alcohol supply at the point of sale is deemed
by experts to fail.
Essentially the community determines the
Territories’ future supported by Govern-
ment policies enhancing public services
like health, education, child protection and
community safety so Government needs to
consult and listen, not play the blame game!
The Barkly community always demon-
strates strength and determination in adver-
sity yet in 2014 socio-economic pressures
and community safety will remain challenges
defining Government policy and service
We need responsive Government in 2014
held accountable through the year of our
united voices knowing determination will
overcome adversity; democracy will conquer
autocracy and solidarity demands discipline.
Season’s greetings for a safe and enjoyable
