IN Opposition I give credit where
credit is due, including CLP mem-
bers for Namatjira and Arnhem who
defended sufferers of Machado Jo-
seph Disease (MJD) across the NT.
The Territory Labor Opposition were
shocked by Chief Minister, Adam Giles’ lack
of compassion for sufferers of MJD affecting
people living on Groote Eylandt and in bush
communities across the NT.
Facing Opposition questions in parliament
the Chief Minister had no idea about federal
colleague Senator Nigel Scullion axing $10
million funding the Machado Joseph Disease
Foundation supporting sufferers and their
The Chief Minister was dismissive of con-
cerns raised by CLP Member’s for Namatjira
and Arnhem however held to account when
his colleagues stated in parliament they
were appalled, disgusted and absolutely
disappointed with the funding cut to MJD
The CLP Government and the Federal In-
digenous Affairs Minister have turned their
backs on the bush and vulnerable Territorians
suffering a debilitating genetic disease denied
funding from the Aboriginal Benefits Ac-
count, money raised from mining royalties
on Aboriginal land.
The Territory Opposition, CLP Member’s
for Namatjira and Arnhem and Maurie Japar-
ta Ryan, Aboriginal Benefits Account Board
Member have demanded Nigel Scullion
reinstate the grant to the MJD Foundation.
Opposition Member for Fannie Bay, Mi-
chael Gunner again called on the CLP Gov-
ernment to accept firefighters are more likely
to develop cancer due to their work after a
second firefighter died since the CLP voted
down Opposition compensation legislation
Opposition legislation accepts fire fighters
are more likely to develop cancer due to
working in toxic fumes aligning Territory
workers’ compensation with other Australian
jurisdictions moving to reverse the onus of
proof for fire fighters and their families.
The Opposition is calling on Chief Minister
Giles to show compassion and introduce
Government legislation in support of NT
firefighters after voting down Labor’s Bill
in the Parliament.
CLP Minister for Community Services Bess
Price responsible for coordinating funding
of power, water and sewerage services to
remote Indigenous communities ‘flicked’ an
Opposition question to the Treasurer on cost
recovery options for remote constituents.
Essential services are currently delivered
by a not for profit business managed by the
PowerWater Corporation developing new
cost recovery options however the Minister
would not confirm or deny increasing power,
water and sewerage charges in the bush.
Eighteen months into Government, CLP
policies have significantly increased the cost
of living, driven up power and water prices,
sacked public servants and teachers, prepared
the sale of public assets, turned their back on
1400 jobs in Nhulunbuy and refused to invest
in the regions!
What can Territorians expect in 2014 under
questionable leadership and mean spirited
CLP Government focussed on the ‘blame
game’ including an alarming fetish of per-
sonal attacks while making amateurish policy
on the run putting profits before people?
