I WRITE in response
to the Member for
Barkly’s letter (“I will
continue to hold CLP
to account: McCar-
thy” (TDT 2/5/14) in
which he tries to jus-
tify abusing parlia-
mentary privilege by
defaming local busi-
Gerry, your response is
obviously a joke?
You’ve glossed over the
fact that parliamentary
privilege is a ‘privilege of
necessity’, it’s not some-
thing that can be used to
make damaging allega-
tions against individuals
without first determining
whether those allegations
have a strong foundation.
We both know that par-
liamentary privilege plac-
es an obligation on all
members of parliament to
use it responsibly.
On 19 March 2014, you
stood up in Parliament and
accused a group of Ten-
nant Creek businessmen
of receiving a benefit from
the CLP Government in
the form of a $30 per week
lease over a block of land
rather than purchasing the
The allegation that you
and one of your local
branch members drummed
up can only be described
as fanciful and mischie-
vous and, if repeated out-
side of Parliament would
Gerry, you can’t even
claim you made a mistake.
You’re a former Minister
for Lands and Planning
with a very good under-
standing of the process
involved in the sale of land
in Tennant Creek.
Your question was reck-
less and designed to de-
liberately attack the local
businessmen and the CLP
It was a clear case of Mc-
Given that you and the
former Labor Government
failed to undertake any
strategic planning, apart
from your failed ‘working
future’ policy in Elliott and
Ali Curung, I can only
assume that your current
strategy of defaming Ten-
nant Creek businessmen
is aimed at discouraging
in the region. Your al-
legations against local
businessmen were clearly
an abuse of parliamentary
privilege which resulted
in you being thrown out
of Parliament on the day.
No-one in Tennant Creek
should be subject to base-
less allegations, especially
by their local member. It’s
high time you accepted
responsibility for your un-
ethical conduct, provide a
public apology and resign.

Did you know that Anyinginyi has
had a comprehensive optometrist
and Eye Specialist service for many
years and it operates in the Allied
Health Building on the corner of
Schmidt and Irvine Streets.
The Eye Team include Maree
O’Hara the Barkly Eye Health
Coordinator, Pamela Clarke the Eye
Health Assistant and our visiting Eye
Specialist, Dr Tim Henderson.
Many people will know Dr Tim
Henderson, because he has been
coming to Tennant Creek for 10 years
and we are proud to say that he has
won many accolades for the work he
does and is known Australia wide (he
was even on Australia Story).
The Eye Health Team run 10
Optometrist clinics and six Eye
Specialist Clinics a year in Tennant
Creek and clinics are also run in
Elliott, Ali Curung, Canteen Creek,
Epenarra, North Barkly and Lake
Clinics are usually booked out well
in advance but the Eye Team pride
themselves on never saying no to
anybody and do their best to fit in an
appointment for everyone on the list.
Maree says that they are a “One
Stop Shop” because Anyinginyi is the
only place in the Barkly region where
a person can get their eyes checked
at the Optometrist and then see the
Specialist if needed.
So if you would like to get your eyes
checked – please ring Maree on
0428 833 576 and she will be very
pleased to help you or drop in to the
Allied Health Building and ask for
an appointment to be made for you.

FINALLY the boss of Bullshit Castle makes
a noise and hasn’t she got it 100 per cent
There was no public consultation, there was not one
single word made public before those bloody white
round things were installed.
It was a better kept secret than the combination to the
vault at the Australian Federal Mint.
To put a roundabout at a T-intersection in Staunton
Street, well the person or persons responsible must have
had a brain explosion. It makes about as much sense as
putting glass doors on public toilets.
With the new estate being built on the eastern side of
town, and a lot of the houses being of the demountable
type where sections are bolted together to make a house,
putting a roundabout on Peko Road is ridiculous.
Somebody down at Bullshit Castle had to be on drugs
to come up with a brainwave for that one.
It makes no sense at all.
If the people responsible for the roundabout misman-
agement were working in the private sector, they would
have all been sacked and subjected to litigation.
Grow a brain, admit you were wrong and remove the
