Man beats woman with metal pole

POLICE have charged a 39-year-old man in Ampilatwatja on Monday for aggravated assault after he allegedly beat a woman with a metal pole.

The 37-year-old woman suffered serious injuries to her back and head and was medevaced to Alice Springs Hospital. 

Police say were responded to a call to the remote community around 5.30am in response to a woman presenting at the local clinic with serious injuries.

The man fled the area but was located at a later time  and arrested by police in Ampilatwatja. He has been charged with aggravated assault. Police say the man was known to the victim but they were not in a relationship.

Forensic officers and detectives from the Southern Investigations Division travelled to the community on Monday.
