SMOKING in cars carrying children will be banned under tough new
legislation to be introduced in the Northern Territory.
Offenders would receive an on-the-spot fine, although the amount has not yet
Health Minister Robyn Lambley said amendments would be made to the Tobacco
Control Act in a bid to protect children from the harms of passive smoking.
The Territory is the last jurisdiction in Australia to introduce the ban.
“The Country Liberals Government is committed to improving the health and
wellbeing of Territorians,” Ms Lambley said.
“Unfortunately, when it comes to protecting kids in cars from smoke we have
been at the back of the pack.
“No longer will the health needs of Territory kids be placed second to those of
other Aussie kids.”
Ms Lambley said the confined space of a motor vehicle dramatically increases the
harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
“The Northern Territory has unacceptably high rates of smoking among its adult
population and the potential exposure of young people to second hand smoke re-
mains a significant concern,” she said.
The amendments are expected to her introduced in the May sittings of Parliament
for passage in August.
