Stories from Julalikari
Located at the Mulga CLA is Julalikari’s Play Group and
Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngster
This service operates 5 days a week, Monday to Friday
and is the perfect place for families with small children
to spend precious time playing and learning new things
Sherrie Salam, the Co-ordinator of Playgroup and
HIPPY programs says ‘children really enjoy coming to
playgroup – they get so much out of interacting with
other kids and using the resources’.
Playgroup is staffed by local young women who have
all seen the great benefits of play in the development of
young children. Playgroup aims to be a positive place
of learning for children and their parents, grandparents
Children and their families enjoy doing different
activities each day that improve fine motor skills they
need to be able to throw balls, ride bikes and develop
sporting skills. Playgroup also helps children to prepare
for pre-school by developing the behaviours they
need to work and play together, share, take turns, and
The children learn other practical skills like packing
away toys, brushing teeth, washing their face and
hands – all skills they will need for pre-school and
school. Children also learn how to listen and to take
instructions from other people, and about the routines
and structure of pre-school and school.
To further prepare children, regular visits are
organised to the pre-school to meet their new teachers
and other children.
Sherrie and her team also invite other local service
providers into Playgroup to provide extra information
for parents and carers.
Often these visits are about delivering new health
messages, or parenting ideas, or up-to-date information
about education and learning.
In cooler months, May to October, Playgroup also
operates a mobile service that meets in Purkis Reserve,
Julalikari Child and Family Services

Home Interaction Program for Parents and Youngster
(HIPPY) runs over a 2 year period that is a home-
based early childhood learning program for children
aged 4 and 5 and their parents.
The program helps prepare children for the reading
and writing part of school.
It also helps prepare parents to be able to help their
children when they start pre-school and in their first
year of school. HIPPY also helps families to be more
confident with schooling and positive about learning.
HIPPY Tutors, who are all local young women, some
of whom have already been through the program, and
who are well trained visit families every fortnight to
assist parents to be their children’s first teacher.
The Tutors use structured materials and activities
designed to be included into the daily life of families.
Children’s activities are about sharing, making,
thinking and doing.
Tutors schedule visits to work through the activities
with parents in the family home.
HIPPY is a successful program operated throughout
