I ARRIVED in Tennant Creek in 1980 on
an Ansett ANA Fokker Friendship one
of two daily regular passenger trans-
port (RPT) airline services connecting
major Northern Territory towns.
Airline services reflect expensive business and
customer numbers dictate the viability of RPT’s
across regional and remote areas demonstrated
in Tennant following the downturn in the mining
industry and withdrawal of aviation services.
The announcement by the Giles Government
seeking expressions of interest from commer-
cial airline operators to re-establish an RPT
service connecting Territory regional towns is
As the previous Minister for Transport, Con-
struction and Infrastructure I had the privilege of
working with Hardy Aviation who commenced
RPT services between Darwin and Tennant
Creek two days per week that extended to three
days from 2009 to 2013.
The success of this regional air service related
to considerable economic activity occurring in
Tennant Creek with substantially increased pub-
lic service, consultants and private contractors
travel managing infrastructure projects.
Federal and Territory Labor Governments were
investing in Tennant Creek and the Barkly at
record levels including residential land release,
Indigenous housing, our hospital, schools, renal
dialysis unit, sobering-up shelter, police sta-
tion, Barkly work camp and roads like Gilbert
This record construction and infrastructure pe-
riod supported airline services consequently pro-
viding the Health Department new opportunities
for patient travel further adding to the business
sustainability of Hardy Aviation’s service.
Unfortunately Hardy Aviation cancelled the
Darwin-Tennant Creek RPT in 2013 reflecting
a downturn in CLP Government investment in
the town highlighting the connection between
pro-active regional economic development
sustaining transport services.
I am proud to acknowledge the sustainability
of Bush Bush initiated under Territory Labor
including Barkly and Borroloola regional route
services and Daylight Express between Elliott
and Alice Springs however RPT regional air
links reflect higher levels of economic activity.
The Hon Adam Giles faces serious conse-
quences of his CLP economic management
with significant increases in cost of living,
unemployment and business closures totalling
340 NT businesses closed in the past two years!
Regional construction and infrastructure proj-
ects support RPT air links between Territory
towns as Government subsidies have proven
unsustainable including major interstate airlines
pulling services in Alice Springs and Darwin.
‘Credit where credit is due’ welcoming the
Chief Minister’s media release however, ‘talks
cheap’ and Tennant Creek needs a defined con-
struction program such as purpose built Early
Childhood Learning Centre incorporating the
Crèche, Clontarf Foundation Academy Room,
Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre, Tourism Entry
Statements and municipal civil works, ‘to name
but a few.’
Government funded infrastructure projects
stimulate regional business and create jobs
enhancing Tennant Creek’s economic cycle
awaiting major Barkly mineral, resource and
energy projects to commence.
Airlines need customers clearly provided by
regional economic infrastructure projects sus-
taining RPT services so Chief Minister, like a
chicken and egg story not rocket science.
